Humorous Quaker anecdotes (Third Impression 1974).

William H Sessions

William Haughton Sessions wrote this book in 1952 and it continues to sell steadily on both sides of the Atlantic. William Sessions was born in York in 1878, his lifetime spanning the reigns from Victoria to Elizabeth. Only a few weeks prior to his death at the age of 88 in 1966, he was checking the proofs of his sequel More Quaker Laughter published in 1967. In addition to developing and consolidating his printing business, he was Treasurer of The Retreat Mental Hospital in York for more than thirty years. A York C.q Councillor for 1.4. years as a young man, he stood three times for Parliament as a Liberal Candidate, was President of the British Federation of Master Printers, Chairman of Bulmer Magistrates, and Chairman (later President) of York City Football Club. From this long and many-sided life he culled and savoured quaint and quizzical sayings and happenings that are the spice of life, always seeking humour which explains and reconciles in preference to irony or sarcasm which divides and hurts. It is this philosophy which he shares with you in these pages.
