2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and 150 years since he published "On the Origin of Species". The establishment of Bootham's Natural History Society (reputedly the oldest in Britain) agreed "in the schoolroom in Lawrence Street on Fifth day, the 14th of 8 month 1834", falls exactly halfway between these dates and at that very time Charles Darwin was on shore from HMS Beagle in Valparaiso, Chile. In celebration of the founding of the Natural History Society at Bootham School (York) in 1834 this book depicts the work produced by pupils at the school during the early years of the Society and indicates the diversity of interests and later careers of the pupils concerned.
