In 1699 William Nicolson was Archdeacon of Carlisle. In that year and in 1701 he made three journeys to Scotland in order to compile a bibliography of sources of Scottish history. During the course of this, he met and corresponded with some of the most enthusiastic scholars, natural historians and antiquarians on both sides of the border. This book is the story of the three intensely exciting years before Nicolson became Bishop of Carlisle.
